Knud Haakonssen

Knud Haakonssen is professor of Intellectual History (part-time) at the University of St Andrews as well as Long-term Fellow of the Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies at the University of Erfurt. He has written extensively on the Scottish Enlightenment and Natural Jurisprudence, most notably in The Science of the Legislator: The natural jurisprudence of David Hume and Adam Smith (1989) and Natural Law and Moral Philosophy: From Grotius to the Scottish Enlightenment (1996). He is the general editor of The Natural Law and Enlightenment Classics series, which includes more than forty scholarly editions of the most important contributions to natural jurisprudence, moral philosophy and political theory in the Enlightenment. He is, moreover, director of the Natural Law 1625-1850 Database, a collaborative project that aims to create an online reservoir of biographical and bibliographical knowledge of Early Modern natural law scholars.
